Troubleshooting
Common issues and their solutions when using UndoDisk.
Installation Issues
Installer fails with “Windows protected your PC”
Windows SmartScreen may block the installer for new applications. Click More info → Run anyway to proceed.
Missing Visual C++ Runtime
UndoDisk requires the Visual C++ Redistributable. Download and install it from the Microsoft website.
Scan Issues
Scan stuck at 0%
Ensure the drive is accessible and not in use by another application. Try running UndoDisk as administrator.
Drive not detected
- Verify the drive appears in Windows Disk Management
- Try a different USB port for external drives
- Ensure the drive is not encrypted with BitLocker
Scan completed but no files found
- Try Deep Scan instead of Quick Scan for more thorough results
- If the drive has been heavily overwritten, recovery options may be limited
- Check that you selected the correct drive or partition
Recovery Issues
Recovered files are corrupted
File corruption can occur when sectors have been partially overwritten. Check the AI confidence score — files with higher scores are more likely to be intact.
”Insufficient disk space” error
Ensure the recovery destination drive has enough free space for the files you want to recover. You cannot recover files to the same drive being scanned.
Recovery is slow
- Close other disk-intensive applications
- Recover files in smaller batches
- Use an SSD as the recovery destination for faster writes
Error Messages
”Access denied” when scanning
Run UndoDisk as administrator. Some drives and partitions require elevated privileges to read raw sectors.
”Drive is locked”
The drive may be in use or encrypted. Ensure no other applications are accessing the drive and that BitLocker is unlocked.
